    Director of Pharmacy
    Director of Pharmacy – Rural Emergency Hospital and Nursing Home

    Position Summary

    The Director of Pharmacy oversees all pharmacy operations within a Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) and nursing home, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant medication management across emergencies, outpatient, and limited inpatient services. This role provides strategic leadership, clinical oversight, and operational management in a setting where resources, staffing, and service lines may be more constrained than traditional acute-care hospitals. The Director ensures medication availability, regulatory compliance, and high-quality pharmaceutical care tailored to the needs of rural patients.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership & Administration

    · Direct all pharmacy operations, including procurement, inventory control, clinical services, and medication distribution systems.

    · Develop and implement pharmacy policies, procedures, and quality initiatives aligned with CMS Rural Emergency Hospital and Nursing Home requirements.

    · Provide leadership for pharmacy staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.

    · Manage the pharmacy budget, cost-containment strategies, and vendor relationships.

    · Participate in hospital leadership meetings, committees, and emergency preparedness planning.

    Clinical & Operational Oversight

    · Ensure safe and accurate medication dispensing for emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatient services.

    · Oversee medication reconciliation processes and collaborate with ED providers, nurses, and ancillary staff.

    · Provide clinical consultation on drug therapy, dosing, antimicrobial stewardship, and safety medication.

    · Maintain 24/7 pharmacy coverage through on-site staffing, remote verification, or tele pharmacy solutions as appropriate for rural operations.

    · Ensure proper handling of controlled substances, including DEA compliance and diversion prevention.

    · Provide medication services to the nursing home.

    Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

    · Maintain full compliance with CMS, Alabama State Board of Health, state board of pharmacy regulations, and Rural Emergency Hospital Conditions of Participation.

    · Oversee medication management standards, including formulary control, adverse drug event monitoring, and medication error reduction.

    · Lead pharmacy components of quality improvement programs, including antimicrobial stewardship, opioid stewardship, and medication safety initiatives.

    · Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and audit readiness for all pharmacy activities.

    Medication Procurement & Inventory Management

    · Manage purchasing, storage, and distribution of medications, including emergency medications, crash cart supplies, and critical access inventory.

    · Maintain cost-effective inventory levels while preventing shortages, waste, and expired medications.

    · Oversee automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), compounding processes, and sterile/non-sterile preparation in accordance with USP standards.

    Collaboration & Communication

    · Work closely with emergency physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments to optimize medication use.

    · Serve as the pharmacy liaison for emergency medical services (EMS), outpatient clinics, and telehealth partners.

    · Provide staff education on medication safety, new drugs, protocols, and regulatory changes.

    Qualifications

    Required

    · Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor of Pharmacy (BSPharm) with extensive experience.

    · Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in the state.

    · Minimum 3–5 years of hospital pharmacy experience.

    · Strong knowledge of emergency medicine, pharmacy practices and rural healthcare regulations.

    · Pharmacy Consultant certification for nursing home. (may be obtained after hire).
