Medical Technologist Director
We are seeking a Medical Technologist Director to lead our rural emergency hospital’s clinical lab. The role includes ensuring CLIA compliance, managing a small but critical team, and adapting services to meet the needs of a remote community. The ideal candidate will balance scientific expertise with leadership and community service.
Job Overview
The Medical Technologist Director is responsible for the overall operation, administration, and quality assurance of the hospital’s clinical laboratory. In a rural emergency setting, this role also involves adapting laboratory services to the community’s needs, ensuring compliance with CLIA regulations and other applicable health, safety, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Operational Leadership: Oversee daily laboratory activities, including scheduling, staffing, equipment maintenance, and quality control
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all testing meets CLIA requirements (42 CFR 493.1443/1445) and local/state/federal regulations
• Quality Systems: Implement and maintain a quality system approach for preanalytical, analytic, and postanalytical phases, including proficiency testing, competency assessments, and corrective actions
• Staff Management: Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate laboratory personnel; foster a safe, supportive work environment
• Resource Management: Manage budgets, supplies, and equipment; prioritize resource allocation in a rural context
• Clinical Support: Provide technical guidance to physicians, nurses, and other providers; interpret results in the context of patient care
• Safety & Environment: Maintain a safe, clean, and hazard-free laboratory environment
• Community Impact: Adapt services to the rural population’s needs, ensuring timely and accurate testing for emergencies and routine care
Required Qualifications
• Education & Certification: Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or related field; ASCP certification or equivalent; licensure per state requirements
• Experience: Proven leadership in a clinical laboratory
• Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of CLIA, CAP, and other applicable standards
• Skills: Leadership, problem-solving, budgeting, quality assurance, and interdepartmental collaboration
