Summary:
A nursing home activities director plans, organizes, and oversees recreational and therapeutic programs to enhance residents’ physical, mental, and social well-being.

Core Responsibilities:
A nursing home activities director is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive activities program tailored to the needs, interests, and abilities of resident. This includes planning social, recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities such as arts and crafts, music, exercise, games, outings, and special events. They ensure that activities are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and appropriate for varying cognitive and physical abilities.

Resident Assessment and Care Planning:
The director conducts assessments of residents’ interests, capabilities, and spiritual or Cultural needs and incorporates these into individualized activity plans. They document participation and progress, update care plans regularly, and coordinate with nursing Staff to align activities with residents’ treatment plans.

Staff and Volunteer Management:
Activities directors often supervise assistants, volunteers, and other staff, delegating tasks such as leading activities, setting up equipment, and assisting residents. They provide training, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and maintain a positive, engaging environment.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
Directors must adhere to federal, state, and facility regulations, including ensuring residents receive a minimum amount of activity time per week. They are responsible for resident safety during activities, administering basic first aid when necessary, reporting incidents, and maintaining safe recreational spaces.

Skills and Qualifications:
Key skills include strong communication, organization, leadership, and public speaking abilities. Experience in recreational therapy, gerontology, or healthcare is preferred.

Educational requirements vary from a high school diploma with on-the-job training to a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy, social work, or related fields. Directors should be compassionate, patient, and capable of engaging residents with diverse needs.
